last updated:15 Jun 2010
The Education Act, which confirmed the abolition of the GTC, became law in November 2011. The GTC is required to carry out its current duties until the end of the current financial year, 31 March 2011.
For more information on the abolition of the GTC, see the Future of the GTC section.
Do I still have to register with the GTC?
Yes. It remains a legal requirement for all teachers in maintained schools in England and non-maintained special schools to be registered with the GTC. Teachers must continue to register with the GTC until such time as new legislation is enacted to cease, or move elsewhere, the functions of the GTC.
You have sent me a reminder letter to pay my fee - why should I pay it now that you are closing?
Teachers are still legally required to be registered with the GTC. If you have worked in the maintained sector at any time since 1 April 2010 you are required to be registered and the appropriate fee is due.
Can I have a refund of my GTC fee?
Teachers are still legally required to be registered with the GTC. The GTC continues to carry out all its current duties until further notice. Therefore, if you have worked in the maintained sector at any time since 1 April 2010 you are required to be registered and the appropriate fee is due.
What happens if I don't pay it?
All teachers are legally required to pay their fee and register with the GTC. If you do not pay your fee you risk being deregistered and not legally qualified to teach in your current school.
Do I still have to register as an instructor/overseas trained teacher?
Yes. It remains a legal requirement for all instructors and overseas trained teachers (OTTs) to be provisionally registered with the GTC.
I currently live in Wales but work in England. Where will I pay my fee?
Until such time as new legislation is in place, you continue to register with, and pay your fee to the GTCE.
I am due to start a course in September – will I need to provisionally register with the GTC?
Yes. It remains a requirement for all trainee teachers to be provisionally registered with the GTC.
