Hearing of Professional Competence Committee

On 14 July 2010 a disciplinary order was made against Mr John Freeman, teacher reference number 9642652, taking immediate effect.

Mr John Freeman was found guilty of serious professional incompetence in that whilst employed at St Joseph's Catholic Combined School, Poole, between June 2008 and April 2009, he consistently failed to perform to the required standard in the following areas:

i) know and understand the relevant statutory and non-statutory curricula and frameworks
ii) design opportunities for learners to develop their literacy, numeracy, ICT and thinking skills appropriate to their phase and context
iii) adapt his language to suit the pupils, introducing new ideas and concepts clearly and with support
iv) manage the learning of individuals, groups and whole classes effectively
v) teach engaging and motivating lessons informed by well-grounded expectations of pupils and designed to raise the levels of attainment
vi) make effective use of an appropriate range of observation, assessment and monitoring to set challenging learning objectives
vii) provide learners, colleagues and parents with timely, accurate and constructive feedback on learner’s attainment, progress and areas for development
viii) support and guide learners so that they can reflect on their learning, identify progress and set positive targets
ix) review the effectiveness of his teaching and its impact on learners.

Mr John Freeman received a Suspension Order with conditions (six months). The condition is that before Mr Freeman may be allowed to teach in maintained schools or non-maintained special schools he shall provide documentary evidence which satisfies the Registrar of the GTC that he has successfully completed a refresher or re-entry course based on the National Standards leading to QTS.
