The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) has ceased operations.

From 1 April 2012, the Teaching Agency , a new executive agency of the Department for Education (DfE), will be the body responsible for the following activities in England:

  • The award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • The issue of induction certificates
  • Hearing induction appeals
  • The regulation of the teaching profession

There will be no requirement to register with the new Teaching Agency and no registration fee following the GTC's abolition.

The Education Act 2011 confirms that all GTC sanctions will remain in force following the GTC's closure with the exception of reprimands.

The new Teaching & Learning Academy website holds resources produced by the former Teacher Learning Academy, including the Research for Teachers summaries.

The GTC website has been archived by the British Library, The National Archives and the Internet Archive.
