Licence to Practise dropped

last updated:07 Apr 2010

The Government has dropped the Licence to Practise proposals in the Children, Schools and Families Bill. Last minute negotiations at Westminster saw relevant clauses required for its introduction jettisoned to ensure the quick passage of the Bill through Parliament.

The GTC advised Parliament that the proposals needed to create the right balance between supporting learning and holding professionals to account, without placing unwarranted burdens on teachers or schools. Should similar proposals be introduced by any future Government as part of new legislation, the GTC will be in a strong position to provide impartial evidence-based advice on how an effective licensing model could be introduced.
