Schools Recruitment Service goes live

last updated:07 Jan 2010

The modern jobseeker now expects this process to take place online, with instant communication with schools and a standard application form that’s easy to complete.

Now there’s a quick and easy way for registered teachers to apply for permanent teaching positions in schools throughout England.  The DCSF’s Schools Recruitment Service takes the hassle out of applying for jobs by putting the whole application process online.

The service gives teachers the opportunity to:

  • set up a personalised account
  • receive job alerts about suitable vacancies
  • apply for jobs online
  • become part of a talent pool for future vacancies
  • book an interview online when shortlisted for a post.

Streamlined process to save you time
You can register online to set up a personal account for managing your job applications and recruitment communications. You can submit your job and geographical preferences to receive alerts for suitable jobs.

The system uses standard online application forms which will automatically fill in the details from your personal account to save you time. You’ll no longer be left wondering if your application has been received as you’ll be sent a confirmation of receipt, every time.

Talent profile
In your own personalised ‘talent profile’ area you can list your employment background, experience and preferences for the next role in your career. Employers registered with the service can then search the profiles and invite suitable teachers to apply for vacancies.

If you get your ideal role, or want to take a break from job hunting, your talent profile can be switched off. You can also hide it from your current employer to maintain privacy.

Schools benefit too
Schools using the service can upload vacancies onto their own branded page to recruit permanent school leaders, teachers and support staff, helping them to promote themselves as an employer to prospective candidates. Schools can search the talent pool of jobseekers, to look for teachers who match their requirements and contact them directly.

The service enables schools to manage the entire recruitment process online which helps them to share candidate information with governors, teaching and local authority staff who may be on the recruitment panel.

Schools minister Vernon Coaker commented that the Schools Recruitment Service could reduce the national cost of advertising for teacher and support posts by almost two-thirds. The price for individual schools to use the service is based on headcount and a typical secondary school could expect to pay around £250 a year according to the DCSF.

A growing resource
Sixty three local authorities, representing over 10,000 schools, and 65 academies have already signed up to the Service. The DCSF expects the number of vacancies channelled through the system, and the number of jobseekers registered on the website, to build up over the coming period as schools look for recruits for the next academic year.

Commenting on the launch, a spokesperson for the Department said:

‘Applying for teaching jobs can be a long-winded, time-consuming process, with different schools having different application forms which may need to be completed by hand and returned by post.

'The modern jobseeker now expects this process to take place online, with instant communication with schools and a standard application form that’s easy to complete. This new Service does just that, providing teachers with a quick and painless way of applying for permanent teaching vacancies.’
