NCSL: Leading from the Middle
What is it?
Leading from the Middle (LftM) is a professional development programme run by the National College for School Leadership (NCSL). The TLA has been working in partnership with the NCSL since May 2005 to provide professional recognition for people taking part in the programme.
Leading From The Middle: ten steps to professional recognition
1. Enrol online selecting NCSL: LftM as your TLA partner
2. Familiarise yourself with the verification criteria for the stage you are applying for stage (see stage booklets and resources).
3. Keep up to date with the Reflective journal after each Development day and include in it some thoughts about the impact of the coaching sessions. Your coach can help you reflect more deeply upon the impact of these days.
4. Complete a plan of the Leadership focus. You may wish to use the planning document provided below.
5. When preparing the Leadership Focus Abstract for the Celebration take the opportunity to reflect upon the whole experience and complete a written account of your Learning Breakthrough. (Refer to the criteria for guidance.)
6. Keep notes made/handouts/materials from the Celebration event and ensure your preparation and presentation includes reference to the following:
- your Leadership Focus and how you were helped to identify it
- what you planned to do in order to address your Leadership Focus: reference to both your LF and the vehicle through which you addressed it
- how your plan unfolded and what you changed and learned
- the impact of the support you received
- the impact of the knowledge base (primarily the LftM programme)
- significant learning moment(s).
Don’t forget to include in your presentation to the TLA all relevant plans/materials used and a record of any learning conversations
7. Refer back to the criteria for whichever stage you are applying for and, if necessary, add additional commentary to address any gaps
8. Complete a Presentation Cover Form downloadable from the TLA key documents page.
9. Submit your presentation to the GTC at Whittington House, 19-130 Alfred Place, London, WC1E 7EA or electronically to tla@gtce.org.uk
10. If you have any queries, contact tla@gtce.org.uk
If you are a leadership coach you can also seek recognition for your role in supporting participants through LftM and the TLA processes. To do this, you are advised to:
- refer to the stage One verification criteria
- complete a presentation, detailing what you have learned whilst acting as a leadership coach. If desired, use the mentor writing frame, available below.
