Induction

published:30 Mar 2009

Induction
Most newly qualified teacher (NQT) will have an induction period - usually three terms long - to support you in your first year of teaching. You can only begin your induction after you've gained qualified teacher status (QTS).

Normally completed in a single school year, this personalised programme of guidance and support builds on what you have already learnt in your initial teacher training (ITT).

Induction has two main elements:

  • an individual programme of support, guidance, professional development and
  • monitoring assessment against the core professional standards for teachers.

These reflect the progression and characteristics expected as NQTs begin to work more confidently and independently as a teacher. More information is available from the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA)

As an NQT it is your responsbility to ensure that your induction period has been registered with your local authority or appropriate body.

If you have any queries concerning the regulations related to an induction period, please contact the TDA induction team.

The GTC and induction
The GTC collects induction results from appropriate bodies in the term after induction is completed,. and records them in the GTC Register of teachers. Appropriate bodies submit results three times a year,

Certificates are posted directly out to NQTs. Any NQT wishing to confirm that their correct contact details are held can call our Teacher Enquiry Service or email the Registration team:

email: registration@gtce.org.uk

If you have any other queries about induction, contact the GTC's induction team:

Completion of induction
Most NQTs complete their induction satisfactorily. In a small number of cases where an NQT is unsuccessful, or has had their induction period extended, they have the right to appeal. The GTC is the body responsible for hearing such appeals.

If you have completed your induction period and wish to lodge an appeal or require more information about the induction appeal function, please contact Nicola Bailey on:

Please note as the appeal body the GTC has to remain impartial and accordingly cannot provide advice about whether an individual should appeal.

For more details on how to lodge an appeal, see the GTC booklet Guidance and procedures for the hearing of induction appeals.
