The GTC’s remit regarding induction is to ensure that all induction results are collected from appropriate bodies and recorded in the Register.

Teachers who pass induction are issued with an induction certificate by the GTC. Certificates are posted out directly to the teacher.

Registration requirement
All newly qualified teachers (NQTs) are legally required to be fully registered with the GTC if they teach in a maintained school, non-maintained special school or pupil referral unit.

The GTC now collects information on those NQTs beginning their induction period, so as to identify queries early. In addition this will help the GTC track NQTs who change employer during their induction.

Some of the most common queries that come out of loading starter information concern:

  • NQTs  who start induction without having QTS
  • start dates that predate the award of QTS
  • teachers who start induction even though they are exempt from the statutory requirement to undertake an induction period.

Data collection
The induction team write to all appropriate bodies three times a year. This is normally in January, May and September.

Data quality
The GTC processes all results and starter information electronically and it is important that any data submitted includes all of the following information:

  • teacher reference number (TRN)
  • date of birth
  • full name
  • correct dates

Any record which cannot be electronically matched due to missing or inaccurate information will be returned to the appropriate body as a validation and will need to be resubmitted.

The GTC aims to comply with best practice in regard to data security.

Employer Access
The GTC is committed to helping appropriate bodies and schools gain better information on their NQTs.

The GTC has a free secure online service called Employer Access which enables induction coordinators and schools to maintain accurate records.
