The Secretary of State for Education announced on 2 June 2010 that legislation will be introduced to abolish the General Teaching Council for England.

Data protection and privacy
The GTC is a data controller under the terms of the Data Protextion Act 1998. We only process personal data in order to fulfil our remit and legal obligations. Data is shared with selected third parties who fulfil a service on behalf of and under the express instructions of the GTC. To view a full list of GTC data processing purposes, you may search the Data Protection Register at www.ico.gov.uk.

Obtaining your record
Any teacher with a record on the GTC's database can request a complete printout of all the information that is held about them. If you wish to see a copy of your record then write to the Registration Team requesting a teacher print, quoting your full name and providing two of the following:

  • teacher reference number (TRN)
  • date of birth
  • National Insurance (NI) number.

Leaving the Register
If you have ceased all teaching and no longer require full registration you can choose to de-register. However, you will need to remain fully registered if you intend to work part-time, on a temporary contract or on a supply basis. To de-register, contact:

You will need to provide the following information:

  • full name (including any previous names)
  • date of birth
  • teacher reference number
  • National Insurance number
  • date of last employment
  • reason for deregistration (for example retiring, moving abroad or taking up a different profession)
  • confirmation that you wish to de-register.


De-registration with the Council does not affect your qualified teacher status and you can re-register at any point by completing an application to register form.
